Great Britain
Great Britain The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Their capitals are London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.
The UK is an island state. The two main islands are Great Britain and Ireland. The two islands are separated from each other by the Irish Sea. The UK is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the north and the North Sea in the east. The UK is separated from the continent by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover.
There are more than 56 million people in Britain. Many of them live in big industrial cities like London, Manchester and Liverpool. But there are a lot of lonely hills, quiet rivers, deep lakes and farmlands in the south of the country.
Everyone in Britain speaks English, but in Scotland and Wales people speak different languages as well. The flag of the United Kingdom is known as the Union Jack. It is made up of three crosses: the cross of St George (the patron saint of England), the cross of St. Andrew (the patron saint of Scotland) and the cross of St. Patrick (the patron saint of Ireland).

Animals in Danger

People have lived on the Earth for many years. They live on different continents in different countries. People depend on their planet, on the sun, on animals and plants around them.
Many animals and plants are disappearing nowadays. Many of them are in danger. Indian tigers and African elephants are among them. People have hunted and killed many tigers in India and a lot of elephants in Africa as tigers and elephants are often dangerous. Tigers can kill domestic animals and sometimes even men. So people are afraid of them and kill them to save their cows and sheep and protect themselves. But people have often hunted tigers for fun and for their beautiful skin. They sell the skin and get money as the prices are high.
The result is very sad. There are few Indian tigers left on the Earth now. Many of them are old and sick. They don`t hunt people but hide from them in deep dark forests. But people have cut down a lot of trees so there aren`t many forests for tigers. African elephants are wonderful animals. They can help men. In the 19th century Africa was full of elephants. But these days there are not many of them except in African parks. Many less dangerous wild animals and birds are also disappearing from the Earth. Modern life is bad for them. The air is not fresh. The water is not clean. Animals don`t have good things to eat and space to live. Their names are in the Red Book. You can find the names of some fish there too.
People must take special care of them all. We must save wild animals. We must find the right balance between land, people and animals. We must take care of nature.

The Earth is in Danger
The 22nd of April is Earth Day. People all over the world think how to protect our planet. People are ready to help nature. They think how to keep the air fresh and water clean to save animals and plants.
Water is very important for life on the Earth. There is a lot of water on our planet. But very little water is good for drinking. In many rivers and lakes the water is very dirty. The seaside is not clean so people can`t swim in the sea. Even fish die in such dirty water. And of course it is dangerous to use it when you cook. For example, Lake Baikal is the deepest freshwater lake on the planet. It is very beautiful but now it is in great danger because of the factories near it. In some places the water in the lake is so dirty that it kills the animals and plants in the Baikal.
The way people live has changed the climate. Nowadays the temperature is rising. The climate has become milder and warmer. If the temperature grows more it will become difficult to live on our planet.
People also do a lot of harm to the forests. They cut down the trees to build farms, homes and roads. So animals lose their homes as they don`t have space to live and good things to eat. This is bad for the air too. Modern factories send a lot of smoke into the atmosphere. Nowadays it is difficult to breathe in the big cities.
So, the problem now is to protect life on the planet to save it for the future.

English-Speaking Countries

People all over the world speak English. In Russia and France, in Germany and Italy, in Spain and Egypt people learn English as a foreign language.
English has become the most important international language of nowadays. People will understand you practically everywhere if you speak English. In most of the countries people speak English and their native language of course. In Great Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand people use English as their native language.
Though people there speak English, yet it is a little different in each of these countries. People speak American English in the USA and British English in Great Britain. Different words often name the same things. For example, people live in f l a t s in England but they live in a p a r t m e n t s in America. They eat c o o k i e s and c a n d i e s in the USA, but b u i s c u i t s and s w e e t s in Great Britain. Children go to school in the fall in America but in autumn in England.

Continents and Countries
We live on the planet Earth. It is round and has land, seas, oceans, continents and countries.
There are four oceans and six continents on the Earth. The continents are: Eurasia, Africa, Australia, the Antarctic, North America and South America. The continents are very large. Oceans and seas wash them and separate them from each other. There are usually many countries on each continent. There are more than 40 countries in Africa, but there is only one large country in Australia. Iceland is a very small country. It is situated on an island to the north of Europe. The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy are in Europe while China, India, Vietnam are in Asia. Canada and the United States are in America. Egypt is an African country.
The largest country in the world is the Russian Federation (Russia). The smallest country is the Vatican.
People of different nationalities live in these countries. They speak different languages. Each country has its national flag, anthem and its own traditions and customs.

Travelling
A lot of people all over the world are fond of travelling. Modern life is impossible without it. Every day people travel on business or for pleasure. They visit different cities and countries. Some of them prefer travelling by plane or by train while others choose travelling by ship or by bus. People also can travel by car or on foot.
Of course, travelling by plane is the fastest and the most comfortable, but it is the most expensive too. You can buy a single or return ticket in the booking office or you can book it. When you arrive at the airport you have to check in and pass the passport control. Then a customs officer asks you some questions and checks your luggage. After that you wait for your flight at a departure hall.
For many people going by train is the best way to travel. It is slower than by plane but it is cheaper. You can go to a railway station with your ticket a few minutes before your train leaves. If it is a through train you don`t have to change.
Travelling by car is interesting, because you can see many things in a short time. When you go by car, you don’t buy any tickets and you can take everything you need in your car. You can stop when you want, enjoy beautiful views and take pictures.
Active people like travelling on foot. They have to be strong as they carry all their things with them.
It is also exciting to travel by sea. The voyage on board the ship is fantastic if the weather is nice.
When you travel you see other people’s lives, cultures and traditions. Travelling educates you and makes your life more interesting as you can learn more about the world we live in.

My Last Visit to the Museum

I`d like to tell you about my last visit to the museum. I went to The State Hermitage two months ago. I chose it as it is one of the world's most well-known art museums. I went there with my classmates. There I saw wonderful sculptures and a great number of portrait paintings. I enjoyed the masterpieces by the world's greatest painters such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens and many others. I arrived there by bus at 10 o`clock in the morning. The opening hours were from 10 till 6 o`clock so I could spend there a lot of time. It was very interesting in the museum. I admired the collections of weapons in the Knight's Hall. In the evening I returned home and told my parents about this fantastic museum. I am going to visit it again with my mother at the weekend.

Form 6. Topic “ My Flat”.

I live in St. Petersburg, Russia.  I am proud of my city because it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Its fascinating sights and hospitable people make it unique.
As most Russians, I live with my family in a small flat in a quiet district not far from the city centre. My flat is in a typical nine-stored building. I live on the seventh floor.
I think that our flat is comfortable as we have got all modern conveniences. The usual modern conveniences are: central heating, electricity, gas, cold and hot running water. Winters in Russia are long and cold but it is always warm in our flat because of central heating. As it is dark outdoors in the morning, we always turn on electricity when we get up and turn it off when we leave the flat.
My mother always cooks tasty food on the gas stove and after meals we  use a dish-washer for cups, plates ,spoons and forks. We all take care of our flat to make it clean. My father cleans the carpets with a vacuum cleaner, my mother waters the floor and washes our clothes in the washing-machine. As to me, I tidy my room every weekend.  That is why our flat always looks nice and cosy.
